St Joe’s Chapter Conference, OlympicCon is this saturday from 9:00am-3:00pm
Meeting Plans: Our resolutions for debates are as follows. Prepare by researching so you have speaking points for tommorow! 1. Resolved, that bail bonds promote social inequality. In the current day justice system, perpetrators who commit less serious crimes have come upon the option of bail bonds to evade the incarceration process. As per the severity of the crime, subjects may be allowed to post bail immediately after being booked. Different states set their own bail rates, such as Los Angeles with $25,000 for perjury or sexual assault. The most popular bail is a cash bail, which is a route only the wealthy have the ability to pay. For some crimes, it is only the elite, or celebrities who are financially sound enough to evade incarceration. For other types of bonds, such as property bonds, it is only the wealthy who can afford to have their jail sentence removed. This sort of system is a disadvantage to the lower income groups as they cannot post bail as easily and may have to serve longer punishments. However, others argue that personal wealth is under their jurisdiction to use, and that it is within their rights to post cash or property bonds. Is the bail bond system discriminatory to social classes or is it simply an American right? 2. Thought Talk: What actions can the United States take to raise their global education standing? Throughout the past several decades, the United States has significantly declined in its ability to educate its citizens for a global economy, being ranked 27th in the most recent study by Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The status of the US as an economic superpower is dependent on training citizens to be economically productive. Issues that have been causing this include failing underfunded, incompetent teachers, and a faulty curriculum. Both sides of the political spectrum have proposed reforms to the education system, ranging from Common Core to student self teaching. What is necessary to improve American education to ensure it will create an economically sustainable future? Connect with us!
