Hey JSAers! Our next meeting will be this Thursday, January 9, 2014 in the freshman cafeteria. We will be discussing all of the following events, updating everyone on our adopt a family initiative, and host a bill writing workshop for winter congress.
As Winter Congress is approaching, we request that you send an email to [email protected] with the subject line "Winter Congress" if you are interested in attending. More information about Winter Congress and all upcoming events is available below. Please remember that you need 4 events in order to get credit for the year. Winter Congress is a double credit event. All other JSA conventions are single credit. The JSA year is halfway over, and it is crucial that everyone plans their events for the rest of the year! Please take a look at the event credit opportunities, and email back on the events you are interested in attending.
1. Winter Congress
We wanted to ask you guys when you would want to leave for the conference. If we leave on Thursday, we will have a lot more time at the conference, allowing us to attend the speakers program and have more free time to explore DC for an extra cost of $60. If we leave Friday, we will not be able to attend this program and may get delayed in traffic, but we will have no additional cost. Leaving on Friday gives us a cost under $300.
What is it?
Congress 2014 is a student run simulation where students take on the role of members of Congress in order to better understand the legislative process by participating in it. This incredible experience will be entirely student-run. The JSA leaders in the Mid-Atlantic work together in assembling a team that is led by a Convention Coordinator and Bill Director. Students get the chance to serve as House and Senate leader, committee chairs, and clerks and essentially participate in a "Mock Congress". Winter Congress is the biggest event of the year, the longest overnight trip, and allows for sightseeing in DC.

2. Board of Ed Meeting
As you may know, our District Superintendent Dr. Gary McCartney is retiring at the conclusion of the 2013-2104 school year. To appoint a successor the South Brunswick Board of Education will be holding a Community Input Session on January 8th, 2013 (this wednesday!) in conjunction with the New Jersey School Boards Association. At this meeting, the process and procedure for selecting a new superintendent will be explained, and input will be sought on current issues and future initiatives which will face the new superintendent. This input, combined with that from other sources will have a DIRECT impact on the selection of the new superintendent. It is important that the students of SB JSA take part in this procedure!
