St Joe’s Chapter Conference, OlympicCon is this saturday from 9:00am-3:00pm
Meeting Plans: Our resolutions for debates are as follows. Prepare by researching so you have speaking points for tommorow! 1. Resolved, that bail bonds promote social inequality. In the current day justice system, perpetrators who commit less serious crimes have come upon the option of bail bonds to evade the incarceration process. As per the severity of the crime, subjects may be allowed to post bail immediately after being booked. Different states set their own bail rates, such as Los Angeles with $25,000 for perjury or sexual assault. The most popular bail is a cash bail, which is a route only the wealthy have the ability to pay. For some crimes, it is only the elite, or celebrities who are financially sound enough to evade incarceration. For other types of bonds, such as property bonds, it is only the wealthy who can afford to have their jail sentence removed. This sort of system is a disadvantage to the lower income groups as they cannot post bail as easily and may have to serve longer punishments. However, others argue that personal wealth is under their jurisdiction to use, and that it is within their rights to post cash or property bonds. Is the bail bond system discriminatory to social classes or is it simply an American right? 2. Thought Talk: What actions can the United States take to raise their global education standing? Throughout the past several decades, the United States has significantly declined in its ability to educate its citizens for a global economy, being ranked 27th in the most recent study by Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. The status of the US as an economic superpower is dependent on training citizens to be economically productive. Issues that have been causing this include failing underfunded, incompetent teachers, and a faulty curriculum. Both sides of the political spectrum have proposed reforms to the education system, ranging from Common Core to student self teaching. What is necessary to improve American education to ensure it will create an economically sustainable future? Connect with us! The Cabinet Retreat calls together chosen cabinet officers every year to allow them to get to know each other and to get the JSA school year rolling! These dedicated JSA members met on August 30th and August 31th at the Sheraton Stamford Hotel in Connecticut, where they acquainted themselves with one another, and gained deeper insight into the effort it takes to run a JSA event. The officers who were elected into Cabinet had a chance to begin their responsibilities for JSA together. Members were educated about their obligations and trained, leaving all attendees more knowledgeable and prepped for the impending year. They expressed their opinions on club growth, advertising, networking, and raising money. Furthermore, they bonded, established ties with one another, and became a tight-knit JSA family! In total, 102 JSA members attended, representing both the Mid Atlantic State and the Northeast State. South Brunswick High School has four individuals in cabinet this year: Ahan Sikri, NJR Director of Debate, Abhishek Dutta, Editor in Chief of the NJR Star, our JSA President Hasin Tasneem, the Vice Mayoral Chief of Staff, and our Director of Debate Nikita Rednam, a NJR Director of Debate. Both Hasin and Nikita attended retreat. According to Hasin “South Brunswick JSA had a great time representing our school at retreat! This past weekend was a very successful start to the new year: members of cabinet were introduced to their jobs and trained on JSA initiatives in order to become informed statesmen. We met such wonderful hardworking people that makes me confident in saying the Mid Atlantic State and the New Jersey Region are in great hands for this upcoming year!". Nikita noted that “Cabinet retreat was an excellent, productive weekend in which I truly learned the behind the scenes work required to run a conference and had a great opportunity to meet new delegates from the Northeast State.” This event truly seemed like a successful commencement to a successful year. ---- Kunal Gupta Director of Fundraising As many of you may know, Rush Holt did not seek reelection this year, leaving a place for a new individual to be the Congress(wo)man in the 12th District of New Jersey.
Going into the Democratic primary, SBHSJSA worked heavily with our very own Andrew Zwicker's campaign. However, the win (with 46% of the votes) went to Assemblyman Bonnie Watson Coleman. She is now against the Republican Primary winner, Alieta Eck and needs our help to ensure a Democrat takes the new seat. If you are interested in volunteering for her campaign, please comment below or contact me (Hasin Tasneem) as a list of names needs to be sent out to her campaign immediately. We urge everyone to take a look at her campaign page at bonnieforcongress.com to learn about her candidacy especially if you want to volunteer for the campaign***. Did you know that if she wins she will be the first African American woman to serve in Congress from New Jersey? SBHS JSA has had a strong history of being an extremely involved chapter in NJ politics and we hope to continue that legacy this year. Volunteering for a campaign is a great learning opportunity and opens doors to even more opportunities in the future. ***Please note that JSA is a nonpartisan organization, and we are not affiliated with or promoting any individual or party. Members of SBHS JSA are asked to always use their own beliefs to make decisions about their support. -Hasin Tasneem Chapter President Recently the results to the 2014-2015 Mid Atlantic Cabinet Applications were released and I am honored to announce that several members of our chapter made it on the list! Congratulations to Hasin Tasneem, Ahan Sikri, Nikita Rednam, and Abhishek Dutta for making cabinet. Our chapter is excited to have SBHS representation, especially from such hardworking and dedicated members. These positions are all well deserved and the whole SBHS chapter is excited to see you all achieve great things.
Seniors: Abhishek Dutta, Editor-in-Chief of the NJR Star Juniors: Hasin Tasneem, Vice Mayoral Chief of Staff Ahan Sikri, NJR Director of Debate Nikita Rednam, NJR Director of Debate What is Cabinet/NJR/MAS? Cabinet is led by elected officials for the Mid Atlantic State (elected during Spring State each year). They are... Ruth Boyajian, South Jersey Homeschool, MAS Governor Simran Singh, Conestoga High School, MAS Lieutenant Governor Ian Baum, Marlboro High School, NJR Mayor Nithin Vejendla, Rutgers Preparatory School, NJR Vice Mayor Being on Cabinet essentially means you are working under one of these officials for the following JSA year to successfully plan, organize, and basically work on everything JSA related. Of course, each position has their own tasks. The MAS stands for Mid Atlantic State, which is our state and one of the ten states that creates JSA. The NJR stands for New Jersey Region, which our region, and one of the regions that forms the MAS. Once again, congratulations on behalf of the SBHS chapter and its' members! Good luck, Khamis Isayeva Secretary Hope everyone is excited for Winter Congress tomorrow! Please read the information below for some last minute reminders.

South Brunswick JSAers traveled to Warren, New Jersey and attended the day's activities with enthusiastic new participants, informative debates, and overall friendliness. In fact, SBJSAers had the most main speakers and moderators of all attending chapters! It was a wonderful start to our chapter conference season, after successfully hosting WorldCon. The SBJSA Executive Board is incredibly proud of all who attended and we hope to see everyone again at the next few upcoming conferences, PirateCon and CruiseCon (information will be presented at our next general meeting and on the website soon).
